4 things employer expect from employees in a post-COVID-19 world

COVID-19 has disrupted every aspect of our lives, including the status quo of operations across organisations in every sector. Almost a year into the pandemic, we’ve witnessed a massive overhaul in the way organisations function, which has had a huge bearing on employees who were expected to adapt to this new way of work almost immediately. People who embrace the below aspects will find it easier to make the transition and thrive in a post-pandemic world.

Integrate flexibility into your work style

The new reality has ushered in a hybrid work model wherein organisations must debate where their workforce will work from — physically. This includes working from the main office, satellite offices, coworking spaces, working from home or a mix of remote working and visiting the main office based on the need. Employees must be flexible to embrace this new model, while also apprising their organisations of the tools and support needed to function seamlessly in this fluid set up. Organisations should maximise the learnings of the past months and continue to provide a work environment suited to the changing times.

Use technology smartly – and use smart technology

Technology has become an indispensable part of our lives in this new reality. The pandemic and remote work have sped up technology support at the organisation level. It is essential that employees maximise technology and view it as a facilitator for collaboration and efficiency. There are many software tools and apps to help us work smarter. One of my current favorites is the MyAnalytics | Wellbeing Edition of Microsoft. Not only does it provide the month or week in review but also prompts me to disconnect and recharge. With various virtual learning platforms available within and outside of the organisation, self-learning is an important skill for each of us to enhance our ability and effectiveness.

Keep a tab on productivity

In the current scenario where we are confined to work in isolation, organisations are constantly trying to assess productivity levels amongst teams and maintain balance. Employees can make this easier by communicating their plan of action and deliverables achieved clearly to their teams so that everyone is assured the rhythm of work does not suffer from a decentralized work structure. Nurturing better relationships with coworkers and collaborating efficiently with multiple stakeholders will enhance one’s own performance as well as benefit team performance.

Be agile

We are not past COVID-19, and therefore we can expect the new reality to continue evolving. We will witness constant changes as we strive to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our families, coworkers, and ourselves, while delivering our business requirements. Many companies and leaders are recognising this need and are factoring families into company wellbeing programs. They consciously set up informal team meets and activities that help employees wind down. Keeping mentally and physically agile, and demonstrating the right attitude and behaviors will help to build resilience and embrace change. COVID-19 has been a great equalizer and taught us that embracing changes and building our resiliency are the best ways to approach it on our work front and in our personal lives.

Now more than ever, it is crucial that employees and organisations are on the same page to understand each other’s expectations and function seamlessly. As much as organisations need to listen, feel the pulse of their people and bring about employee-friendly work structures, it is also necessary that employees open themselves up to new ways of work and also proactively convey specific feedback to their organisations to create a win-win and smooth sailing journey for both.
