5 questions that can help programmers ace their job interviews


Interviews can be daunting for interviewees; hence prior preparation is extremely important to ace the upcoming interview. Dr. Mitul Thakker, Chief People and Compliance Officer, IKS Health shares a quick guide to prepare you for an interview that could prove to be useful to calm those nerves.

Here’s the key-points to consider while answering the 5 most common questions that will help you nail your interview:

Can you walk me through your resume?

This is typically the first question. Here the interviewer is expecting to gauge your knowledge of the software, understanding of the subject and your accomplishments in a nutshell. This is your opportunity to highlight your achievements and showcase your progression to higher roles.

Can you help me understand the role you are currently performing? Give me a few examples of the activities that you performed which weren’t a part of your role.

Here it is expected that you explain your role and responsibilities without focusing much on the project. Do not focus on the technicalities of the project or the specific requirements. The intent is to understand whether you have the right kind of experience that is required for the role that you are interviewing for, and the right attitude.

Take your time in answering this question. While talking about your role, highlight major achievements, give references of the past roles as well to show your growth. If you are an architect, explain the architecture and pros-cons of the architectural decisions. If you are a programmer, talk about the coding standards, delivering on time etc. Also, keep a few examples ready for explaining the activities you did which were not expected from your role.

Please give me an example of a time when you were faced with a challenge and how you overcame it

The intent behind asking this question is to understand multiple aspects such as the kind of challenges you have tackled, how resourceful and skilled you are, your problem-solving ability, whether you take the ownership, whether you are a good learner etc. Take your time in articulating your answer, first share the challenge that you were presented with, further explaining the steps taken to reach the solution. Your answer should reflect as many of the qualities that you possess, and your personal values.

Why do you want to leave your current organisation?

The most common answer for this is – “for better prospects”- this is not the answer that hiring managers generally look for

If your answer is – Better/higher pay scale, it may raise questions about your performance and your value system.

If you are looking for growth, explain your learnings and show that you are ready for the next role.

Stability is something organisations look for in a candidate, so if you are leaving within a short span of time, be prepared to have a very good reason for the shift.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years from now and how do you think joining us is a right step in that direction?

This is to understand your way of thinking and how committed you are to your career. Make sure you research the interviewing company and connect that information to your answer. A well-researched answer gets the interviewee more credibility and an impression of seriousness.
